3. Ten of the 12 cuts on this CD feature the trio of Buddy DeFranco on clarinet, Dave McKenna on piano, and Joe Cohn on guitar; the final two cuts are duets with DeFranco and McKenna. Although at times I found my imagination supplying what seemed to be the missing drum and bass parts, the more I listened, the more I came to enjoy the purity of /5(5).

4. Great energy and "4 to the bar" in the left hand. I have listened to it many times. Other good songs include "Just as though you were here", "Thanks for the Memory", and an upbeat blues number he composed "Splendid Splinter". He really could have made "Indiana" into a classic McKenna romp but chose not to, staying slow-tempo all the way.5/5(1).

5. As a soloist McKenna played a left hand like no one else, a striding, irresistible, bass-fiddle-like, always unexpected line comping his right hand. And in his solo recordings you'll hear that striding bass, a complex right hand, and something going on in the middle, as if McKenna had three hands/5(4).

6. I wish more attention had been paid to his music during his lifetime. Dick Johnson, a longtime friend and colleague of Dave’s, wrote in some liner notes of a live album Dave recorded at Jordan Hall in Boston, about how Dave once played on a JATP tour with Charlie Ventura’s band, a tour which also featured Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum and others.
